Subway, Zion National Park, Utah.
One of the holy grails in Zion, this slot requires a bit more effort and experience than the more famous Narrows. Rappels, swims in 55 degree water and some route finding all contribute to a challenging but unforgettable adventure into this well watered canyon. Arriving on an 80 degree day made for some invigorating if not near hypothermic swims for this pilgrim. I would recommend a half length rope, dry bags and temperatures above 95 degrees to best appreciate this beautiful drainage. Technical: Nikon 28-80mm zoom lens, long exposure. PLEASE NOTE, this image prints as a wide angle only with a minimum print size of 8x12 followed by 10x15, 12x18 etc. Contact Sahale Photo in advance of your purchase to ensure you receive a picture that mirrors the gallery image and to receive a correct price quote. Slide Rock, Utah.
At first glance, this feature appears to be a natural arch of sorts but years ago, part of the canyon wall literally sheered off resulting in one of the most impressive chockstones in the entire Southwest. Technical: Nikon 24mm lens. Rune Lake, Central Cascades, Washington.
European painters like Goya and J.M. Turner have held a fascination for me for many years. Despite employing very different brushstroke styles, they both shared an affinity for expressing their work through dramatically lit scenes. Here, with a storm threatening some 7000 feet up in the Stuart Range, I jumped on an opportunity to expose this scene where a bright flash of light illuminated the granite lake basin under a heavy veil of fog. Technical: Nikon 28-80mm lens, polarizer. Wedgwood Massif and Cerulean Lake, Mount Assiniboine Provincial Park, Alberta. Technical: Nikon 50mm lens, split density filter, backpack to create windscreen. Snowking (landscape view), North Cascades, Washington.
Technical: Nikon 24mm lens. Mount Shuksan, North Cascades, Washington. An overnight trip to Mt. Baker yielded this twilight image of a lakelet, recently formed from a departed glacier, and the classic northwest face of Mt. Shuksan. Initially, I intended to go much higher to scout a route on Mt. Baker but the sound of a small cascade drew my attention to this basin where I set up a small bivouac and scouted for the waterfall. I discovered the actual trickle of water did not match up to its echo and continued hiking to the opposite ridge above the tarn for some more satisfying views. Technical: Nikon 24mm lens, 8 second exposure, split density filter, f-stop set at 16 for depth of field. Vapor Trails, North Cascades National Park, Washington. An exploratory adventure into the southern Picket Range of the North Cascades placed me in position to capture this unusual meeting of a moonset right after the sun had dropped below the horizon. A successful ascent of McMillan Spire with my climbing partners and the overall ambience of exploring this lonesome mountain range resulted in a remarkable trip. Technical: Nikon 28-80mm lens. Hoh River Bridge of Sighs (portrait view), Olympic National Park, Washington. Sentinel Stack, Olympic National Park, Washington. Olympic National Park is famed for its temperate rainforest, abundant wildlife and low elevation glaciers but perhaps the real jewel of the park is the miles of untamed wilderness coast. Each beach has much to offer. Point of Arches features many seastacks and caves along with numerous tidal pools while others such as Cape Alava offer excellent opportunities to view both land and sea based mammals. Technical: Nikon 28-80 zoom lens, meter taken at 90 degree angle to the sun for exposure. Waterfall at the Cirque, Wind River Range, Wyoming. Taken near our basecamp, this picture depicts one of the memorable cascades in the range. Above the falls, loom the Watchtowers and Lizard Head. Technical: Canon 24mm lens. Moon over Cannonholes, Glacier National Park, Montana. The scenery of Glacier National Park is world renowned. First designated as a park in 1910, Glacier features a fantastic array of alpine meadows, mammoth sized lakes and a significant population of brown bear, wolverine and grey wolf. On my way back from an ascent of Gunsight Peak, I noticed the moon beginning to set above a ridge and moved to a location where I could compose for this convergence. The wait more than justified the slow descent under headlamp and Power Bar dinner. Technical: Nikon 100-300mm zoom lens. Gnome Tarn, Cascades, Washington. Prusik Peak reflected in the pool is one of Dragontail Tarn, Cascades, Washington.

Bishop Lake, Kings Canyon National Park, California. Larch Way, Alpine Lakes Wilderness, Washington. Tower of Light, Kings Canyon National Park, Sierras, California.
It had been many years since my last visit to the High Sierra. Fearing large crowds, I secured my permit early and branched some distance from the main trail to set my backcountry camp. The crowds proved neglibible, certainly less than what I have encountered in the popular parks of the Rockies and the scenery was nothing short of amazing.
Technical: Nikkor 17-55mm lens, split density filter.
