Meadows of Og, Canadian Rockies, Alberta. With the sun nearly setting on the horizon, the challenge of this image was maintaining proper lighting on the foreground flowers while rendering some detail on the outlying hills. I composed a number of images including some that cut off the background all together but decided that the inclusion of the trees and mountains would create more depth and power to the scene. The long approach hike precluded the use of flash fill and reflective screens but a split density filter and favorable wind conditions allowed for lightweight solution to complete this composition. Technical: Nikon 28-80mm lens, split density filter. Selkirk Paintbrush, British Columbia. My trip into the Canadian Selkirks was intended as a tour of granite bound lakes whose primary visitors are reputed to be the local grizzly bear population. Many of the lakes I did in fact locate but I came away even more amazed at the array of flowers in fresh bloom on the mountain slopes. While shooting this scene, a family of grouse along with a hungry horde of mosquitoes shared in my delight. With a time delay setting followed by a quick walk and a rolled up sleeve, the Selkirk Meadows, British Columbia. Technical: Nikon 28-80mm zoom lens, split density filter. Bistort Meadows, British Columbia. Technical: Nikon 24mm lens. Lupine at Boulder Basin, Glacier Peak, Washington.
One of the popular approach routes to the summit of Glacier Peak usually entails an overnight camp at scenic Boulder Basin. With small campsites carved out of the hillside, a year round water supply and simple access to the Sitkum Glacier, climbers having been calling this backcountry camp, home for over 50 years.
Technical: Canon 50mm lens, polarizer.
Fireweed, North Cascades, Washington. In August, I hiked 16 miles to Miner's Ridge in the Glacier Peak Wilderness. Image Lake and Glacier Peak are the featured attractions of the area although the significant black bear population roaming the steep alp slopes greatly adds to the wilderness character. On this trip, local forest fires obscured any quality images across the valley to Glacier but did produce excellent indirect lighting for some close-up work. Technical: Nikon 55mm macro lens, high shutter speed to negate wind shifting the flowers. Royal Basin Lupine, Olympic National Park, Washington. Some measure of perseverance, due to the susceptibility of rapid changes in weather, is required while photographing in these high basins located in the northeastern corner of the Olympics. On this occasion, a heavy volume of fog made for wonderful diffused lighting especially suitable for close-up photography. Technical data: Exposure F5.6, Nikon 28-80mm zoom lens macro setting. Colorado Columbine, San Juan Mountains, Colorado. In a section of the Rockies near Silverton, I wandered into a tundra-like meadow filled with the most impressive wildflower display I had yet seen. With interesting peaks such as Pilots Knob, small ponds and mine tailings about there was no shortage of visual intrigue but the columbine made the most lasting impression. Technical: Canon 55mm lens macro setting. Cascade Meadows.
Technical: Nikon 24mm lens. Lupine and Paintbrush, Cascades, Washington.
In late July, I followed a snow melt stream on a wander back to the Pacific Crest Trail. While, most of the time this would result in some kind of a brutal bushwhack through nettles, slide alder and devils club, this particular stretch offered up only soft pumice, clumps of alpine fir trees and this bouquet of blooming heather, paintbrush and lupine.
Technical: Nikon 28-80mm lens, macro setting.
